MyWorkSearch shows how learning innovation can transform business

MyWorkSearch has pushed the boundaries when it comes integrating learning into the heart of the workflow of an individual and as a result has won a gold for innovative e-learning solutions at the 2010 e-learning awards and a silver award at the Institute of IT Training awards in February 2011. It uses learning innovation to completely transform the traditional business of outplacement.

The organisation is now able to tailor advice and support at an individual level whilst creating a people oriented service that is totally scalable to meet increasing demand. This story shows you how they linked learning to day to day activity for their users  and what we can learn from their journey.

The weak economy and difficult jobs market has meant that large numbers of people are looking for work.  Good companies help their staff by providing outplacement services to help them review their strengths and understand how to position themselves for the next challenge. But traditional outplacement services can be costly as it primarily relied on face to face support. This human delivered model (plus limited budgets), means that the help each person receives is can be token and typically woefully insufficient.

Meanwhile vast numbers of people don’t even receive this minimal support. MyWorkSearch wanted to offer a highly personalised, interactive, quality outplacement experience that could be accessed totally online.  This would involve both learning and doing so it was critical that individual’s training was integrated with the tools and websites that they had to use if their job search was to pay off.

The challenges that MyWorkSearch faced in supporting individuals to get a job is no different to many of those challenges Learning & Development face in supporting staff who have to deliver in their job.  Usage of MyWorkSearch by individuals had to result in them taking action to deliver benefits.  In exactly the same way that learning at work has to result in changes in behaviour to deliver impact on the business.

70:20:10 models show that the real learning takes place on the job when the skill or feedback is applied to a real situation. Moving forward, integrating learning into the workflow of the individual will be critical.  However, to be really effective, this informal, on the job learning needs to be supported in a flexible, user friendly way that allows individuals to personalise their learning journey.

  • Work with business to understand the live work environment – what activities the individual needs to do in their job and the tools they need to do their job.
  • When developing e-learning , set tasks that need to be worked out in the live work environment
  • Use a range of formats to suit the audience (eg video, flash, reading)

  • Provide a choice of webinars for individuals to provide opportunities for interaction.
