This report presents the evidence for L&D leaders to consider on how to respond to the changing mobility of the workforce, championing new ways of learning and performance to support the new, smarter-working employee.
It aims to stimulate action that will:
- Support individual performance improvement at the point of need
- Improve the learning experience through technology innovation
- Harness the potential offered by mobile technology for learning
- Enhance business agility and flexibility
Data for this report is drawn from the 2015 Towards Maturity Benchmark Study™, research with over 600 L&D leaders, reported in Embracing Change. Study methodology and participant demographics can be found in Appendix B on page 79 of that report. The benchmarking review process included questions on how learning and performance support is enabled for staff who are on the move. Reference is also made in this report to the Towards Maturity Learning Landscape™ research, conducted online during 2015 with over 1,600 learners. In this research, we look at the way in which people are using mobile devices for learning, as well as their willingness and motivation to learn in their own time.
Fast Facts from this report
The workforce has gone mobile. People are turning to mobile technologies for convenience and connectivity. For many, their mobile device is the medium of choice for communicating with each other and for learning.
90% now own a smartphone and/or tablet and 84% are downloading apps. 74% use a mobile to access resources they need to do their job.
- 57% like to be able to access learning on the go
- 42% respond to alerts as soon as they come in
- 37% are accessing work-related resources whilst they are travelling – only 18% are now learning at their work desks
L&D are catching up: 67% of organisations now offer mobile learning in some form:
- 37% provide smartphones or tablets for learning and development
- 38% specifically enable learning resources for mobile devices
- 40% support Bring Your Own Device (BYOD)
But this activity is not delivering the desired impact: 87% want to help learners to access support at the point of need, but only 15% (39% in the Top Deck) are having any success. 86% of L&D want to facilitate continuous learning, but only 11% report this is actually happening.
What can L&D leaders do to engage an increasingly mobile workforce in learning? How can they support performance improvement when and where required?
Supporting the mobile workforce is about more than access and flexibility of time and place, although these are important aspects:
- 58% agree that learners can choose to access resources at any time
- 35% agree that learners can learn at places convenient to them
The mobile workforce is tech-savvy and connected, learning more from peers and resources that are easily found at the point of need, rather than formal online or face-to-face classroom interventions. 77% rate working in collaboration with others as essential/very useful, but just 33% of L&D professionals agree that their learners learn more from each other than from course content.
Furthermore, 50% of L&D professionals still see the course as their only option for building and supporting performance and only 20% have the skills in-house to facilitate social and collaborative learning.
